UPDATE: The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said effective 12:20 p.m., the tsunami watch has been canceled.
The state of Hawai’i is currently under a Tsunami Watch after a magnitude 8 earthquake was reported in the Kermadec Island region.
The Watch was issued at 9:38 a.m. Thursday, and according to Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
“Based on all available date a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports.
An investigation is currently underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawai’i.
If tsunami waves impact Hawai’i the first is expected to arrive at approximately 4:35 p.m. HST Thursday.
