The Maui Police Department responded to a structure fire in Wailuku on Wednesday at about 3:56 a.m.
Upon police arrival, the residence was observed to be fully engulfed with first responders unable to make entry. At the time, no one was living in the residence and the damages are estimated at a total of $130,000.00.
Neighbors reported seeing a blue-colored SUV leaving the area at the time of the fire.
Through investigation, it was learned that 28-year-old James Wiles had been recently evicted from the residence and that Wiles had made previous statements that he would burn down the residence if he was ever kicked out or evicted.
Wiles was also known to drive a blue-colored Acura “MDX” MPVH which was similar in appearance to the vehicle that was last seen leaving the area of the fire.
Police located Wiles’ vehicle parked within the Walmart Parking lot and in possession of a female. According to the female, Wiles had left the vehicle in her possession and was planning on leaving the island because he had burned down a house and police were looking for him.
Later that day, Wiles was located and arrested at the Kahului International Airport where it was learned that he also had two outstanding bench warrants in the amount of $50,000.00. The investigation is still on-going.
