Off-Duty MPD Officer Hospitalized in Kihei Struggle

On Nov. 27 at 12:54 am, Maui Police Department Kihei patrol officers responded to an assault-type case fronting an establishment in Kihei. 

Upon arrival, they observed the victim, to be that of an off-duty Maui Police Department officer.

The off-duty officer was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. As a result of the assault, the off-duty officer sustained life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

On Nov. 27 at 10:11 a.m., MPD detectives arrested 28-year-old Tomasi Caones-Paahana of Wailuku.  He was charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and is being held on $500,000.00 bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
